IT’S TIME TO TALK ABOUT MONSTROSITIES

You Tell Me is participating in the Visitors Biennale, taking place 14.-24.7.2022 in Helsinki's Meri-Rastila and Kallahti area. Our piece is called "It's Time to Talk About Monstrosities". The piece looks into issues of demolition, construction materials and value of buildings.

“Such ugly shacks, monstrosities are being protected, this reaches the limits of unintentional comedy. This fervent desire to protect buildings went too far a long time ago” writes a commenter by the nickname “Näin se vain on” (“That’s just how it is'') on an article in Helsingin Sanomat in 2019 on the topic of Hotel Vuoranta being under a building protection law: https://www.hs.fi/kaupunki/helsinki/art-2000006167074.html

What buildings do we perceive as valuable and why?

We invite the people of Meri-Rastila and Vuosaari and others interested from near and far to visit Hotel Vuoranta. The old hotel and Alko training center has stood empty for several years in an idyllic seaside setting in East Helsinki. During the years without use the buildings have worn down and the landscaping grown wild. Now the main building of Vuoranta is getting a new life as a center for supported housing.

You Tell Me Collective has studied the building and the construction site, and will share the findings in a piece called It's Time to Talk About Monstrosities, opening to audiences 14.7.2022. The collective will host a guided tour to Vuoranta, after which you can join the opening of the piece in the lobby of the neighboring Hotel Rantapuisto. The tour will be held primarily in Finnish but English speakers can be accommodated if needed. The opening will take place in the Lounge of Hotel Rantapuisto and provide refreshments and a chance to discuss the topics with the collective members. The piece will be open until 24.7.2022.

The exhibition, situated mainly in public places, explores the unique environments of the Meri-Rastila and Kallahti area from architecture to nature.
