Architecture Without New Construction

We are in the decisive decade in terms of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. As humanity is heading full speed past 1.5 degrees of global warming, what is needed from architecture may not be a new building.

In 2021 French architect Charlotte Malterre-Barthes launched an initiative called A Moratorium on New Construction. The initiative calls for a pause to new construction, demolition and extractive practices to enable critical reflection of the construction industry. Through this pause, the construction industry could realign itself to less extractive and destructive paths, focusing on care, repair, working with the existing buildings and redistribution of real estate. As long as the construction industry continues business as usual the needed radical rethinking will not happen.

What is architecture without new construction? What is the role of architects if they are not creating new designs but rather working with what already exists? Are architects ready to redefine how we understand authorship as the design work involves increasingly the oeuvre of architects who have come before.

Is architecture without new construction stagnant and conservative, stifling new ideas and innovation, or does it in fact open up a fundamentally different, more meaningful and exciting direction for the field?

Pelastetaan Merirasti-kappeli!

Merirasti-kappelin kohtalo on epävarma Vuosaaren seurakunnan luopuessa sen käytöstä. Jopa purkaminen uhkaa. Pro Meri-Rastila ja You Tell Me -kollektiivi järjestävät avoimen keskustelutilaisuuden kappelin tulevaisuudesta tiistaina 25.10. klo 17:30–19.30 Merirasti-kappelissa, Jaluspolku 3. Ovi avataan klo 17:00.

Kappelin epävarma tulevaisuus on osa alueen laajempaa muutosta. Suuri määrä Meri-Rastilan taloja puretaan, ja pelkästään torin ympäriltä puretaan ostoskeskus, kolme asuintaloa sekä koulu, päiväkoti ja nuorisotalo, jotka ovat samassa rakennuksessa. Kappeli vanhan terveysaseman ohella ovat ainoita jäljelle jääviä alkuperäisiä julkisia rakennuksia. Mitä kaupunkiuudistus tarkoittaa asukkaille? Häviävätkö palvelut alueelta samanaikaisesti, kun rakennuksia korvataan uusilla? Mikä voisi olla kappelin rooli alueen asukastoiminnan mahdollistajana?

Rakennusten arvo ymmärretään usein vasta, kun ne ovat hävinneet. Miten paljon muistoja, rakennushistoriaa sekä toisaalta arjen sosiaalisia verkostoja on sitoutunut kappeliin? Näistä ja muista kysymyksistä pääset keskustelemaan illan aikana.

Ilmastokriisi – tilanteen päivitys 5 kuvalla

Meillä kullakin on käsitys siitä, että ilmastonmuutos on vakava uhka ja että asialle pitää tehdä jotain. Samoin kuulemme alati puhetta siitä kuinka ilmastotoimiin ollaan tartuttu, kuinka monista tuotteista, liikkumismuodoista ja kaupungeistakin tehdään nyt hiilineutraaleja. Mutta tajuammeko silti haasteen todellista suuruutta ja kiireellisyyttä? Tai sitä kuinka paljon hiilineutraaliuspuheesta on viherpesua? Ja entäpä jos juna menikin jo ja ilmastokatastrofiin on vain pakko alkaa sopeutua?
